Introduction

The major goal of the Indus Earth Trust’s climate change adaptation programme is to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.  This includes reducing harm, increasing resilience, and strengthening the ability to respond to climate-related risks and changes. Adaptation strives to protect human populations, their livelihoods, and the natural environment from the negative effects of climate change.

Community-level climate change adaptation in Sindh, Pakistan, is centered on increasing resistance to extreme weather events and enhancing livelihoods, particularly in vulnerable coastal and agricultural areas. This involves measures such as creating multi-hazard-resistant structures, educating communities on resilient housing and livelihood practices, and promoting community-based disaster management. In addition, there is an emphasis on empowering people through initiatives such as Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and encouraging climate-sensitive livelihood modelling to mitigate the impact of climate change on livelihoods.

Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM).

The Community-Based disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) approach aims to enable local communities to identify, assess, and manage their own disaster risks. This technique demands active community participation in identifying local hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacity mapping in order to create and implement hazard-specific protective measures.

Multi-Hazard Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (MHVCA)

A Multi-Hazard Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) is a process that assesses a community’s vulnerability to several hazards as well as its ability to cope with and recover from disasters. It helps with risk identification, vulnerability analysis, and the creation of disaster risk reduction and adaptation plans.

Establishment of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)

The Indus Earth Trust is aiming to develop Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) in sensitive areas to strengthen communities and prepare them to respond to catastrophes. This effort entails training community volunteers as first responders and providing them with the knowledge and skills required for successful community implementation.

Training and Skill Development

The Indus Earth Trust focusses on training and capacity building to improve community readiness and response skills. Climate change adaptation programs involve educating communities about resilient homes, livelihoods, and small businesses, as well as empowering people to participate in disaster risk management initiatives.
